<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (11)

John R. Miller, 74, left this world Monday, May 13th at 12:30 am at Mayo Hospital in Mankato, MN, surrounded by an abundance of love. Due to a fall at his home in 2023, he battled ongoing medical issues while living at Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center in Mankato.John was born on July 1, 1949 to Corrine and George and he, along with his other siblings, Sondra (Ronald Von Arb); Bruce (Sharon); "Cookie"/Jerilyn (Jerry Wilking), Tom (Nancy), his twin sister and best friend, Joan (Jerry Stalberger), Doug, and Dan (Valerie), grew up in St. Clair, MN. John spent his childhood playing sports, shooting marbles, slingshots, hunting and fishing. After graduation in 1967 he went to work at Brown Printing in Waseca and met Sue Manthe. They eventually married and moved to Janesville, where they lived until they had Jeremy. They then moved to Pemberton and a year later welcomed Jessica, or "Jessie", as her Dad affectionately called her, and two years later, Sara. Sue and John divorced but remained good friends. John was a loving and proud Dad and spent much of his time going to their sporting events, taking them to visit family, fishing, hunting, shopping, auctions and taking drives. Many hours were spent outside playing baseball, football, and a fan favorite, "Deer Hunter", which involved John perched on steps, lobbing balls at the scattering kids, trying to tag them. John truly loved to make people laugh and was a prankster. He was well known as the Uncle who came with a disclaimer. His kids would often tell him, "here's the line, Dad, here's you crossing it" or lovingly forewarn him to "behave". He had a heart of gold and loved to talk to people, tell stories and jokes, and light heartedly tease people, just to see them smile. John's ultimate pride and joys were his kids, Jeremy, Jessica (Brian), and Sara (Jim), and his grandkids, Ryley, Sydney, Kinsley, Greyden and Logan. The stories they will hear of their "Poppa" could never do him justice and he will forever be missed and deeply loved. We are comforted to know he was greeted in Heaven by his Mom and Dad, Bruce, Cookie, Ronnie, Jerry, and Brian. No doubt it was quite the welcome. His family wishes to thank everyone for their love and support over the last year and invite you to his visitation (9:30 am), funeral service (10:30 am) and lunch at Immaculate Conception Church (101 Church St) in St. Clair, MN on June 10, 2024. Burial will be held at a later date.

He was raised in the Saint James area where he worked on several family farms growing up. He talked about growing up in a farmhouse with no indoor plumbing, frozen bedpans, and running to the outhouse in the winter. He also told stories of wilder times. As a young man he was a rebel without a cause and loved fast cars, motorcycles, and guns.In 1966, Harlan joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War. While serving in Vietnam, he was injured when a mine exploded, and his arm was hit by shrapnel. On January 13, 1968, Harlan was married to Arlene Jeanette Flaherty. After the wedding, they made their home in Jacksonville, NC where he was assigned to Camp Lejeune and later served a year at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After serving in the USMC, he returned to the Butterfield area where he worked in a variety of mechanic and laborer positions before rejoining the military in 1973, this time with the US Army.Harlan spent almost 20 more years serving our country around the globe, a patriot in the long Cold War. He was assigned to bases in Alaska, Oklahoma, Germany, and Kentucky. He served two tours in Germany. One in Neu Ulm, Germany, and another in Frankfurt. While assigned to Frankfurt, Harlan was able to visit the Berlin Wall when it was being taken down which was a pivotal event in world history that marked the falling of the Iron Curtain. While in Frankfurt, Harlan logistically supported Operation Desert Storm and made a trip to Kuwait to inspect Russian built tanks and artillery that had been seized or disabled. During his time in the military, Harlan was recognized with numerous awards and medals which he would just shrug off as being no big deal. Harlan retired from the US Army in 1991 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3.Harlan and Arlene settled in Saint James, MN upon retirement from the US Army, but it wasn't long before he returned to school using his military educational benefits earned under 2 different GI Bills. He graduated from Mankato Technical College with certification in Heating and Cooling followed by a certification in Plumbing from Jackson Technical College. For many years, Harlan could be found in the repair shop at Fleet & Farm where he enjoyed working on small motor repairs and other mechanical issues. He was a rare combination of someone who had a love of life and a code of honor where a man's word was his guarantee. Friends and family alike looked up to him for his personality, work ethic, natural mechanical ability, and big heart. His passions were shooting (Trap and Skeet), hunting, fishing, reloading ammo, drinking coffee, and watching westerns. He especially enjoyed his big game hunting days in Alaska and Germany, the family hunting lodge in Ardmore, South Dakota, and fishing for walleye on houseboat trips in Canada. He had a love for firearms in general and was a Lifetime Member of the NRA. He enjoyed being involved with youth shooting sports and hunter safety programs teaching the younger generation safety and skills of marksmanship.Harlan is survived by his wife, Arlene (Flaherty), of 56 years, along with his son and daughter, Michael Hanson and Jackie of Grand Forks, ND and Beth Hanson of St. Peter, MN. Mary Grace (Norris) Rosenow, age 89, formerly of St. Peter, MN, passed away peacefully in Champlin, MN, Thursday, May 2, 2024. She was "home" in her assisted living facility for the final week of her journey, lovingly ushered to the next place by family members and compassionate caregivers.A Celebration of Life will be held at Champlin United Methodist Church, 921 Downs Road, Champlin, MN, at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 11, 2024 with visitation one hour prior. A private graveside service and burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, St. Peter, Minnesota. Livestreaming of the service will be available at www.saintpeterfuneralhome.comSt. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials would be welcome in Mary's memory to American Parkinson's Disease Association or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.Born January 23, 1935, the first-born daughter of Edmond Hand Norris and Grace Bainbridge Norris, Mary's very first adventure was a horsedrawn sleigh ride through deep snow to get from the family home in Villard, MN, to the hospital in Glenwood in time for her arrival. She grew up in Long Prairie, MN, where she was the homecoming queen at Long Prairie High School in 1951, graduating in 1952. Most importantly, this is where Mary met her true love and life partner, Darrel Dean Rosenow. Darrel and Mary married shortly after high school and together attended University of Minnesota for two years before returning to Long Prairie where Darrel joined the Norris family hatchery business and Mary dedicated herself to raising their growing young family. After brief stints in Brainerd and Gaylord, the family settled in St. Peter, where Mary and Darrel lived for more than 40 years until his death in 2019. Mary focused her energies on raising her family, and over the years also worked as a hospital aide, sold fresh vegetables from her plentiful garden, managed the local fabric store, and served as the receptionist for a local doctor. After retiring in 1991, Mary loved spending time with her children and their spouses as well as her five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In her active years, Mary enjoyed gardening, golfing, skiing, painting, projects at the cabin, and swimming in the lake. She and Darrel were square dancers for more than 40 years and members of the St. Peter Promenaders. Even as she aged and lived with Parkinson's disease, Mary continued to knit and quilt and bake with gusto. She did not allow the progressive disease to define her but rather she faced it with courage, dignity, and spunk, up until the very last days of her life.In 2019, Mary relocated to Anoka and then Champlin, MN, to be closer to family. For the last five years of her life, Mary's primary caregiver was her daughter-in-law, Kathy, whom Mary referred to as her "right hand person". The two formed a special bond that was evident to all.Mary is survived by her sons, Darrel Dean, Jr. (Lucy) of Minneapolis and Charles (Kathleen) of Ramsey; son-in-law, Dr. Mark Heggem of Aitkin; grandchildren, Joshua (Shauna) Heggem of Battle Lake, MN, Andrew Heggem of Madison, TN, Nathan (Matt Dittes) Heggem of Brooklyn, NY, Fuhua Ding (John Thode) of Shorewood, MN, and Taylor Rosenow of Coon Rapids, MN; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanie Trigg of Capitola, CA; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Edmond and Grace Norris; her husband of 66 years, Darrel Dean Rosenow, Sr.; eldest son, David Rosenow; daughter, Elizabeth ("Liz") Heggem; brothers, Paul Norris and Edmond Norris, Jr. and sisters, Nell Dobbs, and Susan Ossian.

Thomas L. Peterson passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at his home in St. Peter, MN supported by his wife Debbie and surrounded by loved ones after an on and off battle with Leukemia.  As a pastor's son, Tom grew up moving around the Midwest but finished high school in 1971 while in Minnesota and considered the state his home as he continued to move throughout his life.  He was recruited by the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) for football and track, a school which set a foundation for aviation - an activity which would become his lifelong career and passion. Tom's career in aviation began in 1975 and spanned 49 years.  He began a 20-year Air Force career as an instructor pilot in the T-38 jet trainer and would later transition to large aircraft such as the RC-135 and E-4.  His military career took him all over the world culminating as a commander for a reconnaissance squadron in Omaha, NE. Tom spent the next decade flying for Airborne Express and capped off his career at Minnesota State University in Mankato teaching young aviation students until his passing.  Always humble, Tom rarely spoke of his accomplishments, but he affected countless men and women as a leader and mentor referred to by his students as the "Godfather of aviation." Outside of aviation, Tom loved the outdoors, working out, spending time with family, and Diet Coke.  His greatest pleasure was to experience all these at once at his lake cabin on Potato Lake; he would work outside on projects in the morning, go for a run, play with family in the afternoon, and enjoy a "refreshment" in the evening. Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years, Deb and his sons with their families: Chad (Emily) and their children, Ava and Elena; Jesse (Nita) and their children, Addi and Sam.  Tom is the middle of three children, leaving behind his brothers Paul (Beverly) and Mark (Andy). A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. <![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (49)

William "Bill" Paschal Blashack, age 68 of Nicollet, MN, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at his home. The visitation will be Sunday, April 28 at the Catholic Church of St. Paul in Nicollet, MN from 2-5 PM. The service will be the following day, Monday, April 29 at 10:30 AM at the Catholic Church of St. Paul in Nicollet, MN. Please see www.nasinecfh.com to leave online condolences. Bill was born in Bertha, MN, on September 23, 1955, to Henry and Dorothy (Lippert) Blashack. Early in life, Bill's family moved to Waldorf, MN, where he enjoyed participating in the 4-H Peppy Peppers, FFA, Boy Scouts (achieving the rank of Eagle Scout), wrestling, and training / playing with his dog Shep. Upon graduating from Waldorf Pemberton, Bill entered the workforce to help his father run the family creamery (Plumb Valley Creamery) and earned his boiler's license. While in Waldorf, Bill built his first house himself on "Blashack St," and continued running the family creamery for a few years. Eventually, Bill took a new job running the creamery in Nicollet, MN, which became home for the next 35 years.Bill married Barb (Bushlack) September 3,1988, and quickly welcomed two sons: Joseph and Mark. Over the years, Bill challenged himself to jobs outside of the dairy industry in the surrounding area, utilizing his compounding previous experiences. In his spare time, he enjoyed singing in the church choir, training the family dog (Sammy) to do tricks, and serving his community. Bill served as a volunteer firefighter in Waldorf, a third-degree Knight of Columbus, member of the Nicollet Lions Club, facility caretaker and Director of Religious Education for the St. Paul Catholic Church, Cub Scoutmaster for Pack 165 in Nicollet, and Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 29 in North Mankato.Bill retired as Head Custodian at Nicollet Public School in 2022 where he oversaw several major renovation projects. During his retirement, he took in some relaxation with his favorite television program: The Lawrence Welk Show. Yet, Bill knew how to still stay busy with his collections of creamery memorabilia (milk cans, bottles, etc.) and Tonka trucks. He liked to say that when he retired, he "wants to restore those 'Tonka Trucks.'" He never did get around to it because he found too much joy in helping others. He often found himself using his life-long skills as a master craftsman to help his sons improve their homes or help build sets for his daughter-in-law's high school play productions. While Bill took pride in achieving his life-long goals: retirement and taking a pilgrimage to various Holy sites in Europe with his wife, his biggest achievement was raising his two sons. He was most proud of the boys they were and the men they grew up to be, and he was honored to walk alongside them through life. Bill will be remembered for his endless curiosity, handyman skills, selfless service, love of family, and above all else, his unwavering faith and commitment to God. Bill was a man who put others' needs before his own, regardless of being asked. Bill always had the desire to do what was right over what was easy. Bill leaves a major void within the Nicollet community, but most of all he will be missed by his friends and family.Bill is survived by his wife Barbara; sons: Joseph (Julia), Mark (Nicole) Blashack; Grandchildren: Killian, Aria, and baby Blashack expected in May. Siblings; Anne (Casey) Marrin, John (Audrey) Blashack, Michael (Ping) Blashack, Maria (Bob) Miner, Cathrine (Robert Hastings) Blashack, Susan (David) Kirsch, Tom Blashack, Carla (Joe) Gatto; In-Laws: Pat McNeal, Roger Androli, Lois Theobald, and David (Maggie) Bushlack; Numerous nieces and nephews; Grand Puppies: Hagrid, Zoe, and Pippin.Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dorothy Blashack; Sister Eleanor McNeal, and in-laws Darrell "Bushy" Bushlack, Karen Androli, Ron Theobald and his dogs: Shep, Duchess, Sammy, and Hunny.
