I have a confession to make: whipped cream is my favorite part of a Starbucks drink. Sure, the specialty lattes and frappuccinos are delicious- but so is the whipped cream!

Whenever I get a Starbucks coffee, the first thing I devour is whipped cream. Emphasis on devour. I have no shame popping off the lid and eating the cream with a spoon. I want to enjoy its deliciousness on its own, without mixing it into my coffee. We all know it is the best part!

Is this just me??? Am I the crazy one?!

Well, the good news is that my obsession led me to recreate the recipe. It takes a matter of seconds and requires no handheld mixer (but if you want those instructions, I’ve got you covered). With a few ingredients and a professional dispenser, you can enjoy coffee shop quality whipped cream at home!

WHAT IS AN ISI CONTAINER?

So, what’s the trick to Starbucks copycat whipped cream? The key is an iSi container, sometimesalso called whipped cream dispensers. They’re the fancy dispensers Starbucks baristas use to top drinks with freshly made cream.

Made from stainless steel, an iSi container uses gas to whip and aerate heavy cream. The key is the nitrous oxide charger. This aerates the liquid and fills the cream with small bubbles. This results in a rich cream in a matter of seconds, no mixer required!

A professional whipped cream dispenser is a fun kitchen tool to have on hand. It can also be used for pancake batters, cold foam, soups, sauces, and other drinks. it is definitely more of a splurge, but it sure is a fun one!

TRICKS & SAFETY TIPS

While iSi containers are fun and convenient to use, they can also backfire and be harmful. Here are a few important tips to follow.

  • Make sure you use cream chargers. You can also buy chargers to make soda, which will not work for whipped cream.
  • Fill the container at least halfway. If you do not fill the container enough, the cream will be runny and not hold its shape. It would be best to use an electric mixer instead.
  • Always point the nozzle away from you and press lightly on the handle to release the cream. It will come out fast!
  • When using gas chargers, always listen for the hissing sound as you attach it to the lid. This means the charger is correctly attached and gas has entered the container.
  • Remove all the gas from the bottle before opening it. When you are done with your whipped cream, pour the excess liquid into the sink by pressing down the handle. Keep holding down until the hissing noise stops. Then hold down an extra 5 seconds to make sure all gas has been released from the container. Now it is safe to unscrew the lid.

INGREDIENTS

Delicious whipped cream needs very few ingredients and only a couple of minutes to make.

HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM: For best results, make sure your cream is very cold. This will help the cream whip up faster and keep its shape.

Do not use light heavy cream, as this does not have a high enough fat content. You will have trouble turning this into whipped cream regardless of the method.

POWDERED SUGAR: A little powdered sugar helps to sweeten the cream. Be sure to use powdered sugar and not granulated, or you may risk grainy cream.

VANILLA EXTRACT: Extract lifts the flavor of whipped cream. You could also use vanilla syrup, but I find that the taste is not as pungent and too sweet.

FLAVOR VARIATIONS

My all-time favorite flavor is vanilla, so I’m partial to the OG cream recipe. However, you can change things up and be creative! Here are a few flavor ideas that are a delicious addition to at-home drinks. To go over the top, add a drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce! You could also add chocolate shavings or a light sprinkle of cinnamon.

FALL INSPIRED: We all know Starbucks practically invented Fall. Pumpkin spice latte, cinnamon dolce, caramel apple spice, chai lattes… seriously. Did the season even exist before Starbucks?! There is no shortage of delicious fall flavors you can easily add to this recipe.

HOLIDAY SPICE: To capture that quintessential holiday flavor, try adding a tiny amount of peppermint extract. For something sweeter, try adding sugar cookie syrup.

COZY COMFORT: Caramel, hazelnut, or chocolate syrup are decadent ways to add flavor to whipped cream. All of these would be great on a variety of coffee drinks, both hot or iced.

TROPICAL VACATION: On warmer days, try coconut syrup in place of vanilla. This would go great on regular iced coffee or could be great with sorbet.

HOW TO MAKE STARBUCKS COPYCAT WHIPPED CREAM

Regardless of which method you use, it will only take a few minutes to whip up a fresh batch of your favorite Starbucks topping!

USING AN ISI CONTAINER

Once you use an iSi container, you will be hooked! It may seem intimidating, but it is so simple and fun to use. Trust me, you will never want to use an electric mixer again.

  1. ADD INGREDIENTS. First, add all the ingredients to the container. Then screw on the lid.
  2. CLOSE THE CANISTER. Screw on the whipped cream nozzle and add the gas charger. The charger will hiss, and the gas will aerate the cream, making it light and fluffy.
  3. SHAKE! Shake the canister for 10-15 seconds to help fluff the cream.
  4. WATCH THE MAGIC HAPPEN. Now the whipped cream is ready to go! Slowly pour it out of the canister (it will go fast!) and enjoy your favorite beverage!

Could it be any easier?! I don’t think so.

USING A HAND MIXER

If you do not have an iSi container, you can also make whipped cream the old-fashioned way (though it’s not as fun once you have tried the other method!). With an electric mixer, it is still easy and fast. I have also found this method to be the most consistent. Gas chargers can be temperamental depending on how much liquid is in the bottle.

  1. CHILL INGREDIENTS. For best results when using an electric mixer, chill the mixing bowl and whisks for 10 minutes before mixing.
  2. ADD INGREDIENTS. Add all ingredients to a bowl. Slowly roughly mix the ingredients and adjust to taste.
  3. MIX! Slowly increase to high speed and mix for 1-2 minutes until stiff peaks form.
  4. ENJOY!

I am also going to let you in on a little secret. If you want to enjoy a single serving of whipped cream, use an electric milk frother! In a small cup with tall sides, add 1/4 of the recipe. Mix the ingredients for 1-2 minutes until thick. Then top on your coffee, hot chocolate, or ice cream. Or, do as I do- enjoy it by itself as a dessert!
