York County Prison Health and Safety Plan (PDF)

Welcome

Welcome to the York County Prison's website.

The mission of York County Prison is to maintain a safe, secure environment for a diverse population of incarcerated individuals, staff and visitors. We are dedicated to implementing innovative methods of security and working with our community partners to provide quality education and evidence-based treatment programs to increase the probability of successful community re-entry.

Inmates may be pretrial detainees awaiting trial or those already sentenced by the Court of Common Pleas.

The facility has a maximum of 2,400 beds and a maximum of 276 beds in the Work Release Center. Employers may contact the Work Release Officer's Desk at 717-840-7593 with scheduling changes or questions.

The Inmate Rules and Policies section contains information regarding inmate funds, use of the telephone systems, and policies regarding mail and personal property.

Please see the Visitation section for additional information concerning in-person visits. There are general rules and regulations, as well as specific regulations and policies for children, adults, attorneys and other officials. Due to recently added security measures, no paperwork may be hand-delivered to an inmate/detainee during a regular visit. This includes any paperwork needed for signatures, checks, etc. These documents must be mailed into the prison. Official visitors such as law enforcement and attorneys are still permitted to bring in necessary paperwork during their official visit.

Updates Concerning Prison Visits and Programming

Please note that these measures are strictly precautionary.

Effective March 12, 2020 - Continued practice as of May 13, 2022

Update - Feb. 02, 2023

Starting March 1st, 2023:

Female inmate visitors' In-person visits will temporarily move to the Front Male Inmate Visitor Area while construction takes place on the Female Wing. There will be a new visiting schedule created for female visits during that duration. ViaPath visitation scheduling will keep the visiting hours up to date and active. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our facility.

Update - May 13, 2022

In-person visits and non-essential travel resumed Friday, December 10th, 2021 for residents in "clean" (COVID-recovered units or areas with no positive test results) housing areas. Visitors may now schedule in-person visits through ViaPath visitation scheduling. If you are unsure if your loved one is in a "clean" unit, you may call the prison and speak to a staff member in the Records Department. Due to high call volume, there may be a wait time. In most cases, your loved one can tell you via the messaging app or by phone if they are eligible for a visit.

  • Visitors must be pre-approved and on an active visiting list provided by the inmate.
  • Visitors must log onto the visitation scheduling app to schedule a visit. See Visitation Hours.
  • Visits may be scheduled 7 days in advance, but no later than 24 hours before the proposed visit.
  • Only 1 housing unit is permitted to utilize the visitation area at any given time. Each housing unit has a corresponding visitation schedule, and the available scheduling blocks will be posted.
  • Visitors are not permitted in the facility if they have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, such as fever (temperature over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) and/or chills, cough, shortness of breath, new loss of taste or smell, or sore throat. Temperature readers are available in our visitation areas and we may mandate visitors to take a temperature reading if there is a significant rise in COVID cases in the community and/or in the facility, as directed by our medical provider and/or the community health strategists.
  • All visitors are encouraged to wear a mask while inside the facility. Please be advised that masks may be mandated in the future. We are excited to reunite friends, family, and loved ones via in-person visits, but we must go about this in a safe manner. If masks are mandated, those who refuse to wear a mask will be asked to leave and the visit will be terminated.

If you would like to find out when a prisoner has been released from our facility, please register for jail release notifications. This service is provided by the Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification network (PA SAVIN).

Also, you may find more information about eligibility for work release.
