Despite a lack of updates over the past few years, Reno 911! may not be completely over. The mockumentary is famously a Cops parody, showcasing the Reno Sheriff's Department as they attempt to intervene in various crimes and domestic issues. It is filled with raunchy humor, as the characters are not especially competent officers and generally struggle with the producers of their supposed documentary. It ran for eight seasons and starred numerous actors, including voice actor Wendi McLendon-Covey.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about Chosen Family (2024), Reno 911! co-creator, Thomas Lennon, opened up about the show's future. Lennon admitted that he expects to see it return and believes that the cast would agree, no matter what they were working on. He had high praise for every star and their dedication to the show but cited Niecy Nash (Deputy Raineesha Williams) as especially devoted. Check out his quote below:
I can't imagine there wouldn't be more at some point. I can't imagine. It's not brain surgery, it's mostly funny outfits. Put Swardson on roller skates, Niecy will still show up. No matter how famous Niecy gets, she'll still come in and be TT. Niecy was doing double duty last time, last time we did one. She's always shooting something very fancy and cool while we're doing Reno 911!. So, she'll come from her unbelievably high-profile Netflix show, and then we're in the grossest kids trampoline park in Sun Valley, and she's in the TT outfit, and she takes it very much in stride. She just can do both with aplomb.
I mean, there's obviously not that much to think about if you noticed. Somebody once quizzed us on questions about our own characters on that show. You remember that Dangle's got his whole Black family from Chicago, and that's Aisha Tyler. There's so many hundreds of details about our characters. [Chuckles] Dangle was kicked out of the Coast Guard. From improvising 125 episodes of something, there's too much backstory. The Dangle is Wikipedia entry in Wikipedia is longer than my own actual entry, I'm pretty sure.
The Show Could Eventually Return Again
Reno 911!'s ending came without the show having much fault. The characters remained compelling, and the show was popular enough that three movies were developed and released, alongside eight seasons. It originally ended after six seasons but was revived for the streaming service Quibi. Two more seasons were developed, but Quibi was shut down after just eight months. Season 8 was released on The Roku Channel instead, but Roku did not immediately announce a season nine renewal, as Quibi might have.
Reno 911! was not officially canceled after season 8. There has simply been no word about a follow-up.
The show only ended because an entire streaming service died around it. Even then, the final movie, It's a Wonderful Heist, was released nearly a full year after season 8. The show remains as renowned as ever, earning multiple Primetime Emmy nominations for its final seasons. If the cast proves willing to return, as Lennon insists, there is no reason to believe that its future is grim. The only real issue is finding a service to fund season 9.
Our Take On Reno 911!'s Future
The Current Streaming Landscape Is Perfect For Reno 911
Reno was originally pitched as a parody of Cops, but the current reality is that even that show was canceled. Without the show that it was satirizing, Reno will need to adapt to the times. There are many procedurals out there with wide popular support, so it could instead choose to mock the various NCIS shows or Law & Order. Showcasing a different style for the show could be enough to make the show more refreshing. With streaming services constantly looking for a show to draw new audiences, Reno 911! could help any platform achieve success.
